Longhorn Vegan Sides

For starters, there aren’t any Longhorn Steakhouse entrées designed for vegans. As the name of the restaurant suggests, all the entrées here revolve around some kind of steak or meat. However, there are several vegan sides you can choose from if you need to put something in your stomach before moving on or want to munch on something to be polite at a dinner event with your family.

There are lots of sides to choose from, including:

  • A plain baked or sweet potato
  • Bread; just be sure to request it without any butter
  • Seasoned rice pilaf
  • Steamed broccoli or asparagus, again requested without butter
  • Seasoned French fries
  • Mixed Green Salad
  • Strawberry and Pecan Salad

With all of these options, odds are you’ll find something that you can at least snack on until you find another place with more vegan options.

Note that certain Longhorn Steakhouse locations also include pretzels or chips. Be sure to ask your server for these if they are available.

Longhorn Steakhouse’s fries are vegan since they use pure vegetable or soybean oil when frying their potatoes.

The Mixed Green Salad isn’t actually vegan by default since it comes with cheese. However, you can easily make it vegan by asking your server to withhold the cheese from your order. Similarly, the Strawberry and Pecan Salad is potentially vegan friendly; just be sure to request that the feta cheese that comes with the Salads by default be removed for your order.

Longhorn Vegan Sauces

While the above sides will likely be your best picks for eating something at Longhorn Steakhouse, you can sometimes add to their flavor by ordering certain vegan sauces. At Longhorn Steakhouse, the vegan sauces available include:

  • BBQ sauce
  • Oil and vinegar
  • Longhorn Steakhouse’s raw horseradish
  • Balsamic and raspberry vinaigrettes
  • The Original Longhorn Steakhouse Sauce
  • Italian sauce

Naturally, you can also find classic sauce options like mustard and ketchup at Longhorn Steakhouse.

Longhorn Vegan Desserts

Interestingly, Longhorn Steakhouse does have a couple of vegan-friendly desserts and off-menu fruits available if you want something a little fresher or need to treat your sweet tooth. For example, you can order oranges or red seedless grapes, in addition to watermelon depending on seasonal availability.

In terms of dessert, Longhorn Steakhouse offers a Banana Berry Smoothie for its vegan diners, though this is coincidental rather than purposeful. It’s something, but it’s not exactly a fantastic dessert option put together with vegan diners in mind.

The Best Longhorn Vegan Options

The best vegan-friendly options at Longhorn Steakhouse are easily the pair of salads mentioned above, as they are put together with fresh vegetables and there are a variety of vegan toppings you can combine with them for your desired flavor.

However, both of the baked potato options are also filling and delicious vegan alternatives at Longhorn Steakhouse. Just be sure to specify that you don’t want any non-vegan toppings included, and there are a lot of those at Longhorn, ranging from butter to bacon to cheese to sour cream. Green onions are available, alternatively, if you want to add them to your potato order.

You can also order mashed potatoes from Longhorn Steakhouse; so long as you order them without butter, they’ll be vegan-friendly as they are not made with milk. Steamed vegetables like broccoli and asparagus round out the best vegan options here.

Longhorn Vegan Food FAQs

Are there WFPG or Whole Food Plant-Based options at Longhorn?

Yes, technically. For example, you can put together a meal consisting of an Idaho baked potato or plain sweet potato with no butter on either choice. Then order a mixed green salad without cheese. You can alternatively choose fresh fruit. Then you love a complete meal of whole foods and plant-based options at Longhorn Steakhouse.

Is cross-contamination possible at Longhorn?

Absolutely. Each of Longhorn Steakhouse’s dishes is prepared to order using normal kitchen operations. Naturally, this means that cooking surfaces and tools are often shared between food items. So whenever you order something from Longhorn Steakhouse, assume that cross-contamination has occurred and that your meal wasn’t prepared with vegan-only instruments are cooking surfaces.

Additionally, Longhorn Steakhouse stresses that its kitchens are not gluten-free. So if you’re a vegan and also have a gluten allergy, you may wish to look elsewhere for food.

Is the Seasoned Rice Pilaf vegan-friendly?

Not by default. However, you can make it vegan by asking the restaurant not to cook it in chicken stock or broth. This request may only be accommodated by certain restaurants, however, as it’s dependent on the chef and what they feel comfortable doing.

Does Longhorn Have Good Vegan Options?

As you can see, pickings are very slim if you stop by Longhorn Steakhouse as a vegan. That being said, Longhorn Steakhouse may decide to eventually adjust its menu and incorporate more vegan-friendly options given the rising acceptance of meat substitutes like Beyond Meat and Impossible Meat.

Both of these classic meat substitutes now taste more like real beef than ever before, so it’s possible that Longhorn Steakhouse will offer these on their menu in the near future. Should this occur, you can rest assured that Longhorn Steakhouse will be among the first to put together a top-tier vegan steak.

For now, do your best to find other places to eat if you’re hungry and want something tasty to enjoy.
