Ingredients

  • 450 g 1 lb minced beef
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion small diced
  • ½ green bell pepper small diced
  • ½ cup tomato puree
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes
  • ¼ tsp ground mustard
  • ½ cup water
  • 3 medium or 2 large burger buns

Instructions

  • Heat the butter in the large stainless-steel pan over medium heat.
  • Add the minced beef to the pan. Sauté until the minced beef completely turns brown and semi-cooked.
  • Add onion and green pepper to the pan, continue to sauté until the veggies are tender. After the onion and green pepper are slightly cooked, pour the tomato puree, ketchup, tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce and add spices to the pan.
  • Cook for about 5 minutes then pour the water gradually when all ingredients are completely combined. Let the water boil and cook the other ingredients for another 5 minutes with water. In this step, some of the water will evaporate and some will be absorbed by other ingredients.
  • Turn off the heat when it remains slightly juicy. If you wish, you can also heat the burger buns in the same pan after transferring the minced meat mixture to another container.
  • Generously put the sloppy joe mix you prepared into the burger buns.

Tips, Notes & Substitutes

Although sloppy joes are a quick and simple dish, there are a few considerations to make.

  • Before incorporating the remaining ingredients, make sure to cook the ground beef until it turns brown.
  • This will contribute to the sloppy joes having a richer flavor.
  • A tablespoon of vinegar can be added to the sauce to give it a little more zest.
  • The best thing about this dish is how easily the ingredients can be changed and how adaptable it is.
  • Ground lamb, ground turkey, or ground chicken can be used in place of the beef.
  • You can substitute extra-firm tofu for the beef if you want a vegetarian version.
  • Ketchup can be used in place of tomato puree if you want a milder and sweeter Sloppy Joe.
  • If you don’t like peppers, you can omit the green bell pepper.
  • You can add hot sauce or diced jalapenos to make your Sloppy Joe spicier.
  • You can heat the burger buns on their own, but it’s better to heat the buns in the same skillet you cooked the minced beef in to enhance the flavor even more.
  • Make sure you put enough mixture to overflow the burger buns, remember that it is served in generous portions.
