Ingredients

  • 200 grams cake or all purpose flour
  • 50 grams icing sugar
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 30 grams soft butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tbsp rum
  • zest of 1 orange
  • pinch of salt
  • 4 tbsp water
  • oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a small bowl combine the flour with the icing sugar and baking powder.
  • Add the salt and mix well.
  • Add the butter, eggs, egg yolk, rum and orange zest.
  • Mix well then add 1 tbsp of water at a time until a firm dough forms.
  • Flatten to dough on a floured counter to a thickness of 5 mm.
  • Cut the dough into rectangles, and with a knife make a cut in the center of each rectangle.
  • Thread a corner inside the slit and stretch gently. Twist into shape.
  • Heat the oil in a deep pan at 350 degrees.
  • Fry the pastries for 2 minutes until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oil and sprinkle with icing sugar. Serve!
