Easy Gyoza Sauce with Garlic & Ginger

If you are making your own gyoza, potstickers or wontons, you will also want a delicious dipping sauce to pair with them. Maybe you’re buying or warming up readymade ones and don’t really like the bland sauce that comes with them. Either way, making a homemade gyoza sauce is well worth it.

The following recipe includes a variety of flavors from sweet to sour and even a touch of spice. Feel free to swap the sugar for artificial sweetener to reduce the carb count if you like or make any other changes to the gyoza sauce to better suit your palate. 

This recipe is delicious as it is but you can always tweak things. If you like more sesame flavor, add more sesame oil. If you want it spicy, add crushed red pepper flakes or increase the amount of chili oil you use. 

Spicy gyoza would pair best with a mild version of gyoza sauce while mild gyoza are good with a spicy one. If spice isn’t your thing though, there is no need to have either one spicy.

How to Serve Gyoza & Gyoza Sauce

Gyoza are little Japanese dumplings with various fillings. Shaped like little half-moons, the thin wrapper contains anything from pork and shrimp to beef or even vegetables like Napa cabbage and carrots. Wontons, on the other hand, are crescent-shaped and typically have thicker wrappers.

As for serving ideas, gyoza are typically enjoyed as an appetizer. They are also perfect for a snack. If you want to have them as part of a meal, pair them with brown rice or noodles along with a green vegetable such as broccoli. Edamame beans also goes well with them.

  • 4 tablespoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon white sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon minced ginger
  • 1 teaspoon chili oil
  • ½ teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon sliced green onion
  • 1 minced garlic clove
  • 3 tablespoon rice vinegar
