I regularly eat cabbage soup, and it is one of my top five favorites. Since there is always leftover cabbage soup that you do not want to throw away (no one wants their ingredients to go to waste), what can you do with it? Can you freeze cabbage soup and store it for later? 

You can freeze cabbage soup. Freezing cabbage soup will not affect its taste; in fact, it might taste even better! It softens in the freezer, so it will be even more succulent after freezing and reheating the soup. You need to thaw the cabbage soup for it to unfreeze properly

This is a normal vegetarian dish; however, meat-lovers can add beef, chicken, ham, etc., for extra flavor. Depending on the ingredients you use to make the cabbage soup, cooking time can take around 25 minutes to 3 hours. In my opinion, wasting a perfectly good cabbage soup is not an option! 

If there is a generous amount of cabbage soup left, you should freeze it. Cabbage soup is one of those dishes that does not lose its taste even if you freeze, thaw, and reheat it. 

How To Freeze Cabbage Soup?

Before placing cabbage soup in the freezer, let the soup cool down. Leave the soup on the counter or stovetop to cool. You can also place the pot containing the cabbage soup into ice-cold water. Here is how to freeze cabbage soup properly: 

  • Divide the cabbage soup into individual serving portions and pour the soup in freezer bags. This will prevent you from thawing too much soup. 
  • The freezer bags must be large enough, so there is enough space for the cabbage soup once it freezes.
  • Airtight containers work well too. It might take more space in the freezer, but it is easier to reheat the cabbage soup quickly. 
  • Seal the freezer bags and containers tightly, so the odors of other food do not mix with the cabbage soup. 
  • Label the freezer bags or containers with the date you put the soup in the freezer. 
  • Place the cabbage soup into the freezer.

If you want to add potatoes to your cabbage soup, it is best to remove them before placing the leftover soup in the freezer. Potatoes and similar ingredients do not freeze and reheat well. 

How To Thaw And Reheat?

Thawing and reheating cabbage soup is important otherwise, you can ruin the taste.

Here are some tips you can use:

  • Once you have taken the frozen cabbage soup out of the freezer, place the soup in your refrigerator so that it can thaw overnight. The refrigerator’s temperature is the best at preventing bacterial development. 
  • Slowly reheat the cabbage soup in the microwave. 
  1. Stir the soup and place it in the microwave for one minute. 
  2. Take out the soup from the microwave, stir it, and let sit for a minute or so. This way, the heat spreads evenly throughout the soup. 
  3. Put the soup back into the microwave for 30 seconds, remove it once again, and let sit for another 30 seconds. 
  4. Finally, test taste your cabbage soup, so you can ensure that it is heated decently. If not, you can place it back into the microwave for another 30 seconds. 
  • Another option is to reheat the cabbage soup on the stove. 
  1. Once the soup thawed properly, place the cabbage soup into a large pot or soup pot and put it on the stove. 
  2. Set the stove on low to medium heat and stir it frequently.
  3. You will know the soup is warm when it begins to steam. Check the temperature before serving it. 
  4. To enhance the flavor, add more seasoning and stock while the cabbage soup is reheating on the stove. 

How Long Can I Store And Freeze It?

Cabbage soup can be stored in the refrigerator for no more than five days. Place it in an airtight container to the back of the refrigerator and when you want to eat it, reheat the soup on the stove or in the microwave. 

Frozen cabbage soup can last up to six months in the freezer. You can keep it for longer, but it will not taste very well. This is also why you should keep it in an airtight container or freezer bag, so no odors or extra moisture comes in contact with it. 

If you have thawed frozen soup but have not reheated it, the cabbage soup can stay refrigerated for four days. After thawing it, you cannot reheat cabbage soup and place it back into the refrigerator. It is best to consume it immediately; otherwise, the soup will go bad. 

Make sure you inspect the cabbage soup before serving it. If the soup emits a foul odor or tastes pungent, then throw it away immediately. Mold can also grow in the cabbage soup; however, you need not fear! Follow the abovementioned steps, and your cabbage soup will stay as good as new!

Cabbage soup can be placed in the refrigerator for no more than five days, kept frozen for up to six months, and if you thawed the soup but have not reheated it, you can leave it in the refrigerator for four days. Check that your cabbage soup is still fresh and does not emit an “off” smell, taste sour, or have bacterial growth.
