A popular Chinese dish, Sha Cha (or Sa Cha) chicken is China’s version of chicken barbeque. But instead of the mostly tomato-based barbeque sauces you may be used to, Sha Cha sauce is made with shrimp and peanut butter, giving it a sweet yet earthy flavor. You can buy Sha Cha sauce in Asian stores or make your own.

The chicken needs a few minutes to marinate but after that, the dish cooks quickly and is ready to serve in about 10 minutes. Our recipe is Cantonese style which means it’s not too spicy or hot. Swap hot peppers for the sweet pepper and hot oil for the cooking oil to add some heat.

Notes & Tips

  • You can substitute chicken thighs for chicken breasts or make this dish with beef or pork strips.
  • If you can’t find sha cha sauce, try satay sauce that has a similar flavor. In a pinch, traditional barbeque sauce will work.
  • Keep in air tight container in refrigerator for up to 3 days.
